President's Message

Ken Meyer

President 2020-2021
Greetings fellow Rotarians and guests!
Welcome to the Rotary E-Club of One World!

Dear Rotary E-Club of One World:

Osbert James, our Club Foundation Chair & President-Elect Nominee, is working on forming a club three-year strategic planning committee.  Thank you Osbert for taking on helping our club with a long-term vision and a plan to achieve it.  Please let Osbert know anything that you think should be considered as part of our three-year strategic plan.  Also, if you would like to be on this committee serving in an active role to help put together an action plan for our club to grow and do Service Above Self like never before, please communicate those desires to Osbert.  For myself, I look forward to seeing the fruits of this effort that Osbert is spearheading and ask for everyone’s support in making it a success.

Thank you to the many club members who have reached out in service and friendship to each other. As we work and serve together more opportunities will develop for us to improve our communities and we will form lasting friendships.

The theme of Rotary International for the month of December is “Disease Prevention and Treatment.”

Rotary makes amazing things happen, like:
  • Providing clean water: Rotary has worked with partners to provide more than 80 percent of Ghana’s people with clean water to fight Guinea worm disease.
  • Reducing HIV infection: In Liberia, Rotary members are helping women get tested for HIV early in their pregnancies. They used prenatal care to reduce new HIV infections in children by 95 percent over two years.
  • Ending polio: Rotary members have played a key role in bringing the world to the brink of polio eradication. Their efforts have not only ended polio in 122 countries but also created a system for tackling myriad other health priorities, such as Ebola.”  (https://www.rotary.org/en/our-causes/fighting-disease).
Thanks to each of you for all you do in Rotary for Service Above Self.

Sincerely,

Ken Meyer, Club President 2020-2021

Program

Preventing Childhood Blindness and Low Vision
brought to you by Marianne Kooij a fellow Rotarian in the Netherlands

Fellow Rotarian Marianne Kooij from the Netherlands is one of the people I had the pleasure to meet face to face in Europe. She often visits our Fellowship Meetings and is also an Honorary Member of the Rotary Eclub of Innovation in the UK and a member of the Eclub of Greater Cape Town in South Africa

Marianne has always been in education and is absolutely passionate about helping children with their vision. She has traveled to many African countries and knows first hand what is needed to help prevent blindness and low vision impaired children. She hopes that this program will give you interest in a topic that is often forgotten as we hope the teachers can help the students. But like Marianne will tell us they do not have specific training or the tools to help these students.

Here are some awesome pictures Marianne took on her travels in Africa, surrounding blindness and vision impairment.

This last image is a group of Teachers getting blindfolded for Braille. I suppose it gives them an idea of what their students would feel or go through.

Thank you Marianne for being a great Rotarian and for helping these students.

Enjoy this program!
