I received the write-up below from fellow OWR Rotarian Larry Aikins announcing a project he is part of to improve healthcare in developing countries.  The goal for phase 1 is to raise $400,000 by the end of this summer and deploy 200 vital sign measurement devices to villages in Ghana.  Please help him with raising money for this important project by donating to the Towson University fund here.
Project Announcement
A group of researchers from Towson University is working to develop an electronic health record system (EHRS) that interfaces with all-in-one clinical vital sign measurement device that includes about 16 medical sensors. The device can generate clinical measurement data that can be converted into patient health record file that meets international standards for interoperability. The generated records are stored in the cloud for healthcare providers to access so as to improve all aspects of patient care such as continuity of care, evidence based treatment and preventing medical mistakes. It is also the place to have entire medical history for each individual.
The EHRS features connectivity among the caregivers, interoperability, patient education and delivery of timely healthcare information tuning for developing countries. The system will be deployed to the hospitals and clinics. We are planning to start our project from the republic of Ghana and then move on to other developing countries as they become available.
The all-in-one clinical measurement device loaded with local electronic health record system can be deployed to any community especially in rural areas so we can expand our telemedicine coverage, as well as hospitals and clinics. As patients use the device often, the clinical data in the region will be accumulated. We plan to analyze the region-specific data so the focus area of public health in that region may be determined. The contents (health records) in the device will be synchronized time to time with the electronic health record system in the nearby hospitals and clinics.
As for the preventive care, patient education will be done at any public place especially the waiting areas in hospitals and clinics along with the associated drug information. The patient education system will be Raspberry PI based education system that can be easily attached to any TV set through HDMI interface for easy deployment. Education materials can be available through built-in Wi-Fi or USB sticks.
