This week's program is brought to you by our very own Carol Metzker, who recently spoke at TEDx WestChester!

The Slave Down the Street

What if one day you found out that victims of human trafficking were toiling in your neighborhood? Would you believe it? Would you do something to make a difference?

Find out what I learned about modern slavery in my community and around the world, and what survivors have told me, in this TEDx talk:

(If you cannot see the video below, click here).

What are Rotarians doing about this injustice?

For several years the Rotarian Action Group Against Child Slavery (RACSRAG) and its members have worked on projects for survivors and victims in India, the United States, Ghana, Nepal and elsewhere.

One of the projects our club, individual Rotarians from OWR, and numerous other Rotarians around the world contributed to was a School4Freedom (S4F for short). It’s in the first year of a three-year process of building a school, educating villagers, helping them develop an income and learn about their human rights so that they can take back their own freedom….and sustain it. Here’s a really short video that explains it.

This is a photo of the kids in the village we’re helping.
Awesome project, huh? Apparently, Harvard researchers think the process is cool, too (although they said it in a different way). They studied the work our frontline partners (MSEMVS is their name/acronym) are doing and found that villagers are experiencing:
  • more food
  • less violence
  • better human rights.

(For anyone interested, here’s their report : http://fxb.harvard.edu/ending-forced-labor-in-india-what-does-it-take/)

What else is happening? How can you help?

Help start a home in the U.S. (in Pennsylvania where I am) for young women who were trafficked for sex as youth and are aging out of child protective services. This will be another marvelous project—once in operation, this home will serve as a model for additional, similar homes elsewhere.

35.8 million people live silently in slavery today. Many are children.

Slaveholders and traffickers make illegal profits of  $150 billion.

When will we decide that one slave is too many and one illegal unscrupulous dollar is not worth it?

Please visit Rotarian Action Group Against Child Slavery’s breakout session and booth in Seoul and join me in a project! (echmetzker@aol.com)
