Program Meeting

Rotary Action Group for Diabetes (RAG-D)

presented by our member Elly Scheepers

Rotary Action Group for Diabetes  aims to address the Global Diabetes Epidemic by raising awareness to the humanitarian eyes, hearts and minds of 1.2 million members of Rotary International and other individuals and organizations who would like to join our efforts.

Did you all know, according to the International Diabetes Federation, 463 million people are suffering from diabetes while nearly half do not know.  Diabetes is a condition in which the human body does not efficiently use (type-2) or unable to produce enough (type-1) insulin.  Insulin is the key hormone that helps metabolize nutrition to energy. Especially in developing countries, diabetes treatment, blood glucose management supplies and information continue to be a challenge.  To assist and support humanitarian projects that address RAG-Diabetes, you may learn more about us at  We invite all Rotarians to join us in addressing this important global public health crisis. Learn more about what Rotary Action Group for Diabetes is about and to inspire, provide guidance, promote, assist and support humanitarian projects that address RAG-Diabetes 5 Areas of Focus.

RAG-DIABETES - 5 Areas of Focus

Awareness – 50% of the 463 million people suffering from diabetes worldwide are undiagnosed.

Prevention - The causes (of diabetes) are complex, but the rise is due in part to increases in the number of people who are overweight, including an increase in obesity, and in a widespread lack of physical activity. (WHO)

Treatment - In the poorest countries around the world, only 1-in-2 have access to life-saving insulin and other diabetes treatments.

Management - To help prevent or delay onset of complications and in many cases reversing the diabetes condition (type-2).

Complications - Diabetes when untreated or improperly managed lead to life-threatening and debilitating complications.

Would you like to become a RAGD Ambassador? We are looking for enthusiastic diabetes champions. If you would like to spearhead effort to address the Global Diabetes Epidemic in your area, we would like to hear from you and work with you.  Drop us a line at
